Long Island’s North Fork harks back to simpler times when we all lived and worked close to our homes, and literally were able to derive a living from the land and the sea. Please note that the North Fork is NOT host to a national chain of hotels or motels. Abandon that hope back on the Long Island Expressway around Exit 64! But if you insist, stay in a Hampton Inn or a Holiday Inn and drive some scenic 20 miles to the end of the LIE and the beginning of the twin forks.
But for those of us Baby Boomers who tire of the conveniences our tract house communities offer, the lure of a North Fork weekend at a B & B is a siren’s call. What can you expect? To pay more for an individually decorated room than you would for a cookie-cutter room at a large chain- individuality costs. Love antiques? Step back in time at Andrews Legacy in Cutchogue….where the attention to period detail coupled with family heirlooms will comfort you. Bed and Breakfasts also offer home-cooked breakfasts to your order….perhaps eaten at table occupied by the Inn’s other guests.
For European elegance in a North Fork setting, try the Rhinelander, also in Cutchogue. Here the proprietor is a professional baker and her breakfasts are especially memorable. In general, as there will be few guests, B & B proprietors can attend to your personal needs, even to arranging day tours and suggesting places and events of interest. Do not expect to find elevators, and if you have pet allergies, perhaps you’d do well to take medication or stay home. Owner’s dogs seem to be a mainstay at B & Bs….think of them as house mascots. Soon you will be thinking you are part of a Ralph Lauren ad- the world of comfort that exists for some….yours for a weekend at upwards of a princely sum, but what price memories?
